This historical novel takes place in 1625 in Estonia and Livonia, following a journey from near Paide to Põltsamaa and along the Emajõgi River to Tartu. It is likely one of the first books in world literature to tell a story from the perspective of an Estonian woman in the early 17th century. One of the novel’s climactic moments is the historical event of Tartu’s siege and capture by the forces of Gustav II Adolf, marking the beginning of Swedish rule in Estonia.
